Analysis of joint formation mechanisms for self-piercing riveting (SPR) process with varying joining parameters

By combining experimental SPR tests with a finite element (FE) model, the influences of top sheet thickness (Tt), bottom (Tb) and rivet length (L) on joint formation mechanisms were systematically investigated in this study. Single factor experiments firstly conducted to uncover three joining parameters' effects results. Interrupted also performed confirm prediction accuracy FE model process. Then, analyzed by numerically inspecting events during riveting process, including deformation behaviors, shank flare behavior quality indicators. The results revealed that parameters affected interlock directly altering positions two boundaries. was apparently Tt Tb, but less influenced L. remaining at center (Tc) significantly Tb. Rapid reduction Tc occurred before penetrated after cavity fully filled. Meanwhile, it is highlighted an excellent tool analyze formation.
